I love my wife, but she does not understand me.
Not in that "oh, she'll never understand my true feelings" sort of way. She's pretty good about that.
It's more that she looks at me doing the nerdy things I love to do with a mystified expression. They just make no sense to her whatsoever. She, unlike me, is not a dork.
Case in point. Tonight, after we put our daughter to bed, we sat down on the couch for a little rest & relaxation. She had the laptop and was perusing real estate listings, convinced that the close quarters of our humble apartment is a threat to our collective sanity. I had the remote (a glorious Logitech universal remote, or "magic wand") and was flipping through channels, bored. I pulled up the DVR screen and selected Futurama: Bender's Big Score, which I'd recorded a few days earlier.
17 seconds into it and she says, "You pick these shows to irritate me, don't you?"
Now let's set aside the confrontational nature of that comment for a moment and focus on the underlying elements:
1) This poor woman, clearly misguided, does not like Futurama
2) In addition, it takes her a miniscule amount of time to identify and ridicule the show
3) As back story, I also happen to know she doesn't like The Simpsons. Or most anything on Comedy Central because she finds the shows and commercials "loud"
4) No, it doesn't make sense to me either
This is indicative of a long-running debate in our house. On her side, I continuously gravitate towards entertainment and activities that to the naked eye would appear immature or silly. On my side, I think she's crazy. I mean, that stuff is AWESOME!
So, this blog, such as it is, is an homage to those of us who wait until our wives go to sleep to play video games. It's for those of us who walk into the Apple Store but don't buy anything because we just bought a plasma TV and feel guilty about spending the money. It's for those of us who mourn the deaths of Gary Gygax and Arthur C. Clarke. And for those of us who can carry on a perfectly pleasant conversation with nearly anybody, but don't get really animated until they start talking about the new trailers for the Iron Man movie.
Unite, my brethren...you've found your home.
